Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada has urged the DUP and Tories to stop indulging in fantasy politics and accept the reality that Special Status for the north remains the only realistic solution to the problems posed by Brexit.
The Ireland South MEP was commenting after the EU released a draft Brexit agreement which envisaged the north remaining in the Customs Union.
“Theresa May and the DUP may want to dance around it but the reality is that Special Status for the north remains the only realistic solution,” she said.
“We are now 8 months out from the October deadline to negotiations and Phase Two has yet to even begin.
“Special Status remains the only fully formed and clear option. Options A and B outlined in the draft use vague language to refer to possible uses of technology or as yet unspecified close relationships between the EU and Britain.
“This is fantasy politics and indulging in it will be catastrophic for Ireland.
“Theresa May and the DUP need to accept the reality that Special Status, or whatever wording you prefer to give it, remains the only realistic solution.”
